Whatever your feelings on Calvin Johnson‘s social politics are, you have to give the man credit for one thing: He’s willing to put his money where his mouth is.
On Friday, The New Republic published a piece about athletes’ mismanagement of their own money, and why so many fail to set themselves up for life after their careers. It’s a lengthy piece, and well worth the read, but it also includes at least one hidden nugget that tells us something new about the Detroit Lions’ star receiver.
According to the article, Johnson is helping to fund a movie with a strong pro-abstinence message called Real Love. What’s more is that Johnson doesn’t expect to make any profit from his efforts but is just hoping to break even and get the message out to the public.
“It’s a message he wants to get out there,” said Corey Galloway, who is helping Johnson in an adviser’s role. “Our goal on the film is just to get our money back.”
The New Republic describes the film as “a coming-of-age story about a girl trying to stay true to her virginity and her religion.” The movie’s tagline from its poster reads “One decision could change this debutante’s life … forever.”
