When Chelsea and Manchester City meet at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Mo. on Thursday night, they won’t be playing just to entertain. They’ll be trying to help as well.
The two Premier League clubs, the St. Louis Cardinals and promoter Relevent Sports will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sold-out game to the Oklahoma Recovery Fund.
The fund will help children affected by the Oklahoma tornado, which devastated Moore, Okla. earlier this week. One dollar (around 66p) from every ticket sold will be used to help recovery efforts, according to Sky Sports.
“Our thoughts are with the people of Oklahoma,” Chelsea CEO Ron Gourlay said. “Everybody at Chelsea Football Club is determined to do what we can to help raise important funds for the recovery process.
“We are united alongside Manchester City in our commitment to help.”
Both teams will wear black armbands during the game in tribute to the victims.
Fans attending the game can join the effort too. The St. Louis Fire Department will collect donations at stadium entrances. Fans are also encouraged to bring supplies (such as batteries, baby formula and pet food) to the stadium. The American Red Cross will be on hand to collect donations to help those in the hard-hit area rebuild their lives.
Chelsea and Manchester City are in the U.S. to play two postseason exhibition games. Thursday’s contest is the first. The two will face off again at Yankee Stadium in New York City on Saturday.
