Patriots linebacker Dont’a Hightower said on Thursday that former teammate Kyle Love wouldn’t be out of work long, and it appears he was right.
One day after being released by the Patriots, Love has already found a new team.
The Jacksonville Jaguars claimed Love off waivers on Thursday, the team announced. Because they finished with one of the worst records in the NFL last season, the Jags have the No. 2 claim on the waiver wire and appear keen on using it to grab any talented player.
Love will be a welcome addition for a Jaguars team that finished dead last in sacks in 2012, even though he’s much more of a natural run stopper than pass rusher. He did record three sacks in 16 games in 2011 and followed that up with 1 1/2 in 11 starts last season.
Love joins former Patriots defensive lineman Brandon Deaderick, who the Jaguars claimed earlier this week, in Jacksonville. In full rebuilding mode, the Jaguars seem set on taking the leftover scraps from arguably the league’s most consistent franchise while trying to build a winner of their own.
The waiver claim means that the Jaguars now own Love’s $1.1 million cap hit.
