Matt Cassel may have lost his starting quarterback job, but he hasn’t lost his sense of humor.
The Vikings’ new quarterback spent four inconsistent seasons as the starter with the Kansas City Chiefs. But before getting his big break, Cassel was holding the clipboard and learning from Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. Or maybe it was the other way around.
“I taught Tom everything,” Cassel joked on Wednesday, according to the St. Paul Pioneer. “I thought he really started to flourish after I got there.”
The Patriots made Cassel a seventh-round draft pick in 2005, after all three of the team’s Super Bowl titles. He did spend four seasons in New England and was always known to have a good sense of humor, which he’s obviously taken with him to Minnesota.
Aside from the jokes, he’s also brought a great wealth of knowledge and experience to impart on the Vikings’ incumbent starter, Christian Ponder.
“A lot of people don’t understand how much time we spend together,” Cassel said after finishing some voluntary workouts with his Vikings teammates. “It’s important to be together and be good teammates. And when you have a good [quarterback] room, it makes everybody better in the room. That’s what it’s all about.”
The Vikings are hoping that with Cassel’s guidance Ponder can finally live up to his lofty first-round draft status. If not, at least his sense of humor can alleviate some of the tensions that may arise.
