Michael Frolik knows a thing or two about scoring with a penalty shot in the playoffs.
For the second time in his career, Frolik scored a playoff penalty shot goal Monday night, becoming the first player in NHL history with two penalty shot goals in his playoff career. The Chicago Blackhawks forward’s goal in the third period also helped the Hawks come from behind in Game 6 in Detroit to force a Game 7 with the Detroit Red Wings.
Frolik was in on a breakaway after blocking a shot in the third period of Monday’s Game 6 when Carlo Colaiacovo caught up to him and slashed Frolik in the hands. A penalty shot was awarded, and Frolik then beat Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard with a backhander. Frolik also scored a penalty shot goal in 2011 when he beat Roberto Luongo during the Hawks’ series with the Vancouver Canucks.
Monday’s goal gave the Blackhawks a 3-2 lead, and they would eventually go on to win 4-3. Game 7 between the two Original Six rivals is scheduled for Wednesday night in Chicago.
