Brandon SpikesLet’s get this out of the way now: Brandon Spikes will not be spotted on Tuesday by the media at OTAs.

That’s because the Patriots linebacker is working out on his own this offseason and will skip the voluntary OTAs, according to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald. Spikes will be in Foxboro by the time minicamp rolls around in June.

Spikes has not been in Foxboro since the offseason program began on April 15. His absence is not related to his contract, which expires after the 2013 season, according to Howe.

There may be some competition at the linebacker position this preseason. The Patriots drafted Jamie Collins in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft. Collins spent time at linebacker and defensive end at Southern Miss.

To add to the mystery surrounding Spikes’ absence, the Florida product has not tweeted since Feb. 28. His last tweet read “TRANSFORMATION.” We’ll see what that means by June 11, when minicamp begins.
