After a promising rookie season, outside linebacker Melvin Ingram was supposed to take on a larger role with the Chargers in 2013. Those plans have been nixed, however, after the second-year player tore his ACL during San Diego’s OTAs.
The Chargers are now scrambling to find pass rushers, leading the team to bring in Dwight Freeney for a visit Wednesday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com. San Diego is left with just Jarrett Johnson, Larry English, Bront Bird and rookies Tourek Williams, Frank Beltre and Devan Walker at the position. English is a former first-rounder, but he’s been a bust in his four seasons in the league, recording just 8 1/2 sacks and four starts in 43 games.
Shaun Phillips led the team in sacks with 9 1/2 last season. He signed with Denver this offseason.
Freeney struggled in the Colts’ 3-4 defensive alignment last season after excelling for 10 years in the Colts’ old 4-3. The Chargers also run a 3-4, but San Diego may consider Freeney just a situational pass rusher at this point in his career.
