It’s a good thing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that a passport is required to enter Canada.
The Bucs signed former Temple running back Matt Brown on Wednesday after an expired passport prevented him from signing with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League.
Brown announced his plans to sign with the Roughriders on May 17 and was planning to fly out to seal the deal on Tuesday. However, the outdated paperwork prevented him from ever stepping on the plane.
Wednesday morning, while Brown worked to renew his passport in Philadelphia, the Buccaneers reached out to his agent. Before Brown could say “CFL,” he was on a flight to Florida and signing an NFL contract soon after.
Even though the passport blunder probably caused Brown frustration at the time, he at least managed to find a hidden treasure where others would find only an endless line at the post office. Whether or not this was one strange act of fate or a result of a forgotten to-do list is for Brown to figure out.
And, no, you don’t need a passport to get to Florida.
