The worst has been realized with Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay, who will undergo shoulder surgery to correct multiple maladies.

Major League Baseball made the announcement via its Twitter account Wednesday afternoon. Halladay will undergo surgery on his pitching shoulder to treat bone spurs, a partially torn rotator cuff and a frayed labrum. In effect, Halladay has been suffering with just about every shoulder injury common to pitchers.

The tweet indicated that there is no timetable for Halladay’s return. However, in modern baseball, elbow injuries are generally looked at as treatable, whereas serious shoulder issues are viewed as a kiss of death for pitchers.

26-year-old rookie Tyler Cloyd will replace the 35-year-old Halladay in the Philadelphia rotation. Halladay has 201 wins over the course of a 16-year career and will be a free agent at the end of this season.
