Shane BattierAround these parts, where the youngest of our four major professional sports teams is more than a half-century old, it is easy to forget that not every region is as steeped in pro sports history. If Celtics fans were asked for their favorite moments, for instance, they would have 17 championships, featuring 16 Hall of Famers (so far), to choose from.

The pickings are slimmer in Memphis, where the Grizzlies are in the Western Conference Finals for the first time. When The Commercial Appeal in Memphis asked readers to tweet their favorite moments in franchise history, there were some surprising choices. Lots of fans picked regular-season moments, including ones from this year. There were mentions of Stromile Swift, Mike Miller and James Posey.

In a way, it was kind of cool. These fans are making their own history, as opposed to watching their team’s history in grainy black and white footage in YouTube videos.

The consensus pick, though, seemed to be Shane Battier‘s 3-pointer in Game 1 of the 2011 West semifinals. Battier’s shot helped give the Grizzlies their first playoff win in 13 tries, and it came against the San Antonio Spurs, the team the Grizzlies are playing right now in the conference finals.
