Jarrod Saltalamacchia is a switch-hitter, which can be problematic for opposing managers trying to match up against him with relief pitchers. It can also be problematic because he needs to keep track of which helmet to wear each time he steps up to the plate.

Saltalamacchia strode to the plate in the ninth inning of Tuesday night’s game wearing the wrong helmet against the Phillies. Batting left-handed, he was wearing a helmet that covered his left ear, therefore leaving his right ear exposed as he stood in the batter’s box.

After one pitch, Saltalamacchia realized his mistake and swapped out the helmet. He ended up doubling off the top of the wall in the at-bat, just narrowly missing a home run.

Check out a photo of his problematic headwear in the screen shot below, with a tip of the hat to Deadspin’s Timothy Burke for spotting the error.
