FOXBORO, Mass. — Tommy Kelly isn’t worried about the playoffs, how many sacks he recorded last year, any other new players on the team or what alignment the Patriots run. He said so himself. He’s just worried about making the Patriots’ 53-man roster.
“I gotta make the team first,” Kelly said. “Bill [Belichick] don’t guarantee nobody nothing.”
Chances are looking good for the 11th-year player. He was getting plenty of snaps on Wednesday next to Vince Wilfork. Kelly’s chances at making the roster increased when the team cut Brandon Deaderick and Kyle Love in the same week.
“You see how many people they get rid of around here?” Kelly said. “Make the team first and then worry about all that.”
For now, Kelly’s just trying to take everything in, learn the playbook and get acquainted with his new teammates. He’s starting anew in New England, and that means not talking about the past in Oakland.
“Not really worried about that,” Kelly said. “Just focused on getting in the playbook hard and learning all that. Not worried about the past.”
That seems to be the right approach to take with the Patriots. It’s only May, but it’s working out for him so far.
