Alex Rodriguez may be slipping into the world of irrelevance slowly but surely.
The three-time MVP and 14-time All-Star joined the Twitter world on May 31 with his verified @AROD account, but he only had just above 6,000 followers as of Monday morning. To put this in perspective, Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant gained more than 250,000 followers only four hours after creating his Twitter account.
Rodriguez — who has yet to play in the 2013 season due to a torn labrum — has been under constant scrutiny for not only his involvement with performance-enhancing drugs, but also for the subsequent lack of production over the last two and a half years. A-Rod had a subpar 2012 campaign, hitting .272 with 18 home runs and 57 RBIs. While these numbers may not seem terrible to the average baseball fan, they are considered unsatisfactory in the eyes of Yankees fans who watched the slugger notch 13 consecutive 30-home run/100-RBI seasons.
These numbers are also inadequate for the Yankees ownership, which dished out a hefty 10-year, $275 million contract to the  10-time Silver Slugger Award winner back in 2007. What, perhaps, is most concerning is the $100 million left to be paid to the 37-year-old.
But there is some good news, Yankees fans. Rodriguez participated in simulated game action on June 22. However, it doesn’t seem that too many people care.
