It’s always a positive thing when it’s tough to make the decision on who gets the starting nod because you have so many good options.

The rookie trio of Matt Bartkowski, Torey Krug and Dougie Hamilton got off to an impressive start during the playoffs because of a few injuries to veteran defensemen. Once those defensemen started getting healthy again, though, coach Claude Julien had some tough decisions to make.

Andrew Ference got the start over Bartkowski in Game 1 against the Penguins and acknowledged that each role on the team is crucial, including the supporting role.
