President Barack Obama doesn’t have to worry about losing votes in the Democrat-heavy state of Massachusetts, so it’s a lot easier to support his hometown of Chicago in sporting events against Boston teams.
That’s exactly the situation as the Stanley Cup Final begins on Wednesday night in the president’s adopted hometown of Chicago. Apparently the leader of the free world is taking a partisan approach to the Bruins-Blackhawks Cup Final.
Obama used the White House Twitter account to wish the Hawks luck shortly before puck drop, even using his signature “-bo” sign-off at the end of the tweet, and the message was eventually retweeted by the Blackhawks’ official Twitter account as well.
Obama’s allegiances to Chicago sports teams have been well-documented over the course of his presidency, but maybe he’s also still smarting from the Tim Thomas snub when the Bruins won the Cup in 2011.
The Bruins will now look to do their best Green Bay Packers impersonation. The Pack spoiled Obama’s hopes back in 2011 when they beat the Chicago Bears in the NFC Championship, squashing Obama’s plans to go see the Bears in the Super Bowl.
“The president don’t wanna come see us in the Super Bowl,” Charles Woodson said in a postgame speech, “Well guess what? We’ll go see him.”
The Packers went on to win the Super Bowl and eventually visit the White House. So maybe the Bruins can take a page of out that playbook.
