It looks like the Red Sox’ rotation will have to find a way to keep going without ace Clay Buchholz.
The right-hander, who paced the Boston staff with a 1.71 ERA in his 9-0 start, won’t be returning just yet, manager John Farrell said Wednesday. Buchholz tried to throw off a mound for the first time since his June 8 injury on Wednesday but ended up tossing just 18 pitches.
Farrell said Buchholz is now going to get an MRI on his injured trapezius, which is the neck and inner shoulder area.
“When he got on the mound and started to really get into his bullpen, he still feels some restriction in that same area,” Farrell said. “… He’s not at the point of a normal bullpen in advance of any rehab start. His own words were, ‘It’s not ready.'”
Farrell did not give a timetable for Buchholz’s return to the Sox, who have gone 11-1 in his starts this year.
