Some soccer coaches want their teams to keep the ball on the ground — presumably so something like this doesn’t happen.
A goalkeeper, playing for Delta Porto Tolle in its Serie D (Italian fourth division) game against Ischia, scored one of the craziest own-goals of all time.
The unfortunate shot-stopper thought he was making a routine clearance. That was until a strong gust of wind blew the ball back toward his goal.
It lingered in the air before eventually falling to the ground. It then bounced in that no-man’s land between the defenders and the goalkeeper and sailed into the open goal.
To make matters worse, the own-goal was the game-winner. The 31st-minute stroke of luck gave visiting Ischia a 2-0 lead. It would go on to win 2-1.
