Do not despair about Andrew Bailey, Red Sox fans. There’s a good chance he was just trying to set up his teammate.

The Red Sox looked ready to put an end to a long, rain-soaked Tuesday when they entered the final inning of their nightcap with the Rays up 1-0. But Bailey, who has put some fear into Boston fans due to his unevenness in the closer role, quickly gave up a home run that guaranteed a prolonged night.

This year’s Red Sox team appears to enjoy dramatic finishes, though, and a walk-off opportunity was too much to pass up for Jonny Gomes. The left fielder was 0-for-3 on the night, including two strikeouts, but he didn’t hesitate with Daniel Nava on first and the game in the balance.

Gomes unleashed a wicked swing that sent the ball over the Green Monster and himself around the bases, where his teammates — including Bailey — capped off the win with a celebration.
