Josh Beckett‘s season is over.
The Dodgers right-hander, who has not pitched since May 13, has elected to undergo surgery to treat thoracic outlet syndrome, which has caused nerve irritation near his neck and resulted in numbness in his pitching fingers.
Dallas-based Dr. Greg Pearl will perform the surgery on July 8, the team announced Friday, sidelining Beckett for three to five months.
The timetable for recovery may be more extensive than that, though. Cardinals right-hander Chris Carpenter underwent a similar surgery last July and has yet to pitch this season.
Beckett was solid for the Dodgers last season, going 2-3 with a 2.93 ERA after being dealt by the Red Sox at the trade deadline. This year has brought no such luck for the three-time All-Star, however. Beckett failed to pick up a win for L.A. in 2013, going 0-5 and pitching past the sixth inning just once in eight starts. He held a 5.19 ERA when a groin strain first forced him to the disabled list back on May 15.
