Kevin Garnett didn’t have to be subject to the Celtics’ rebuilding moves. The Big Ticket held a big veto on trades, and he could have stopped any attempts that Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge made to send him to another team.

But on Thursday night, Garnett went along with what has become the Celtics’ plan ever since Doc Rivers went to the Los Angeles Clippers, approving a trade that gutted Boston of its remaining Big Three parts and officially sent the Celtics into rebuilding mode. Garnett waived his no-trade clause, setting up a deal that sent him, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry to the Nets.

Boston fans must prepare their final eulogies, but Brooklyn supporters sound pretty excited about the deal, which makes them instant contenders (if the instant pressure isn’t too much).

And, as the Daily News frames it, it’s all thanks to Garnett allowing the deal to go through.
