Mexican Soccer Player Jesus Escoboza Loses Shoe, Keeps Running, Scores Goal in U-20 World Cup (GIF)

The 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup has produced some great goals, but fans waited patiently for a strangely great one … until now.

On Friday, Mexico’s Jesus Escoboza scored one of the great goals of the tournament. The 20-year-old lost one of his shoes as he ran onto a pass, but he managed to stay composed and score anyway.

Escoboza’s strike came in the 70th minute of the U-20 World Cup Group D game between Mexico and Mali. A Mexican forward headed a pass into the space behind the defense, and Escoboza took off running after it. A Malian defender quickly closed in on Escoboza and eventually stepped on his right foot.

Escoboza’s foot slipped out of his shoe, but he kept running and scored with his covered left foot. It gave his team a 3-1 lead in a game Mexico would go on to win 4-1.

It makes us wonder, has Shoeless Joe Jackson been reincarnated as a young Mexican soccer player? Stranger things have happened.
