P.J. HairstonUniversity of North Carolina shooting guard P.J. Hairston was arrested for possession of marijuana on Wednesday after entering a license checkpoint stop in Durham, N.C. But that may not be the only trouble Hairston is finding himself in.

Police say that a 9 mm handgun and a magazine with nine rounds of ammunition were discovered outside of the rental car Hairston was driving. However, it is unclear whether the gun belongs to Hairston or one of the two other men in the vehicle with him.

“We are not saying it belongs to Hairston,” Durham police department spokesperson Kammie Michael wrote in an email to the Raleigh News & Observer. “I am not sure the owner has been identified. It was found outside the vehicle. It was not found on Hairston.”

Durham police also seized 43.2 grams of marijuana in the vehicle and charged Hairston and passengers Miykael Faulcon and Carlos Sanford with misdemeanor drug possession. Hairston was also charged with driving without a license and was released on a $1,000 unsecured bond.

Hairston averaged 14.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game as a sophomore for the Tar Heels and bypassed this year’s NBA draft to return for his junior campaign.
