Bruins fans knew Patrice Bergeron was hurting heading into Game 6 on Monday, but the center revealed that his injuries were even more serious than most speculated.
Bergeron told reporters after the Bruins’ 3-2 loss to the Blackhawks that he entered the night with a broken rib and torn cartilage in his rib cage, and that he also suffered a separated shoulder during the game.
The alternate captain exited Game 5 on Saturday midway through the second period with an undisclosed ailment (a “body injury” was the most specific description given) and did not play at all in the third period. He was taken to a Chicago hospital in an ambulance but flew back to Boston with the team and was in the lineup for Game 6.
Bergeron did not record a point during the contest, but he logged 17:45 of ice time. The Selke Award runner-up played in all 21 postseason games for the Bruins, tying David Krejci for the team lead in goals with nine.
