AT&T Park in San Francisco is famous for its “splash hits,” with a total of 89 home runs landing in San Francisco Bay since the Giants’ home ballpark opened in 2000. PNC Park in Pittsburgh also borders a body of water, but a ball finding its way into the Allegheny River on the fly is a rarer occurrence.
Pirates first baseman Garrett Jones joined that exclusive club Sunday afternoon, becoming just the second player — and first Pirate — to homer into the Allegheny when he went yard against Cincinnati’s Jonathan Broxton in the eighth inning.
Prior to Jones’ blast — which MLB estimates traveled 463 feet — the only home run to reach the drink had come off the bat of Houston’s Daryle Ward back in 2002.
