A Red Sox fan who was stabbed through the neck by a Yankees fan at a Branford, Conn., restaurant in 2010 has settled in court for $4.3 million, according to The Associated Press.
The Red Sox fan, Monte Freire, won the verdict after he claimed that bartenders at the restaurant, U.S.S. Chowder Pot III, ignored warnings that the Yankees fan, John Mayor, was harassing others at the bar and trying to start a fight, the AP reports. Freire said the bartenders continued to serve Mayor alcohol.
Mayor was convicted of assault and will serve 10 years in prison, while Freire suffered a brain injury, stroke, impaired speech and vision, and severe scarring as a result of the attack.
Mayor thought Freire and his group of friends were Red Sox fans based on their accents, according to the AP. He declared the restaurant Yankees territory and continued to harass them before stabbing Freire.
The restaurant is expected to appeal the decision.
