It’s official: Trey Ball is a member of the Red Sox organization.
The Red Sox announced Wednesday that they have signed Ball, whom they selected in the first round (seventh overall) of this year’s MLB draft. The 18-year-old left-handed pitcher was one of 11 signings announced on Wednesday by Red Sox director of amateur scouting Amiel Sawdaye.
Ball, who was the Red Sox’ earliest draft pick since Boston selected Trot Nixon seventh overall in 1993, reported to Fenway Park on Wednesday, but he’ll head to the Gulf Coast League Red Sox in Fort Myers next week.
Ball was drafted out of New Castle High School in Indiana, and he brings plenty of potential to the franchise. He excelled as both a pitcher and an outfielder, but he ultimately decided to focus on pitching during the spring. The southpaw went 6-0 with a 0.76 ERA, 93 strikeouts and 13 walks in 46 innings during his senior season.
The Red Sox also announced on Wednesday that they have signed Forrestt Allday (outfielder, eighth round), Kyle Martin (right-hander, ninth round), Taylor Grover (right-hander, 10th round), Carlos Asuaje (infielder, 11th round), Jake Romanski (catcher, 14th round), Bryan Hudson (outfielder, 15th round), Joe Gunkel (right-hander, 18th round), Reed Gragnani (infielder, 21st round), Jantzen White (infielder, 24th round) and Daniel Bethea (catcher, 34th round).
