Sloan, who abruptly resigned in 2011 in his 23rd season as head coach of the Utah Jazz, could be coming back to the organization. The team has had a preliminary discussion with Sloan about a return, the Deseret News reports, although it is not clear what his job would be. It sounds fairly certain that current head coach Tyrone Corbin‘s job is safe, though.
“That’s a situation that’s strictly up to Ty or somebody in the Jazz organization,” Sloan told the Deseret News’ Jody Genessy. “If they want me around, fine. If they don’t, [fine]. They’d talked to me a little bit about it a little earlier.”
Sloan attended the Jazz’s predraft workout in Salt Lake City and accompanied Corbin and a few members of the front office to the draft combine in Chicago.
Every other head coach from the Jazz’s Utah era has gone on to take a non-coaching role within the organization. Tom Nissalke has done TV work, and Frank Layden became team president after Sloan replaced him as coach early in the 1988-89 season. Former players have found positions within the organization as well. Jeff Hornacek was a part-time assistant coach from 2007-11 and a full-time assistant until last month, when the Suns hired him as their head coach. Karl Malone recently joined the team in an advisory capacity, coaching Utah’s young big men.
