The Red Sox could eventually kick the tires on Michael Young. They just haven’t done so yet.
The New York Post reported that the Red Sox would be interested in trading for Young if the Phillies made him available, adding that a source reportedly said, “They want him badly.” But according to WEEI.com, the Red Sox have not engaged in “a single conversation” with the Phillies regarding a trade for the veteran infielder.
Just because the Red Sox and Phillies haven’t opened up talks yet doesn’t mean that they won’t eventually. WEEI.com also reports that, according to another major league source, Young could eventually find himself on Boston’s radar before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
The Red Sox certainly face an interesting situation when it comes to the left side of the infield. Will Middlebrooks was recently demoted, and Stephen Drew is battling a hamstring injury. That leaves Boston with a combination of Jonathan Diaz and Brandon Snyder down at third base for the time being.
Young, who is in the midst of his 14th major league season, is still a productive player, and he’s slated to become a free agent after this season. Acquiring him wouldn’t be much of a financial burden.
Young is playing in his first season in Philadelphia after 13 seasons in Texas. The 36-year-old is a seven-time All-Star. He won a batting title in 2005, and he led the American League in hits in 2005 and 2011.
