The last position Notre Dame thought it would have to make a decision about was quarterback. The Fighting Irish appeared set for the next two or three years with sophomore Everett Golson under center.
Golson had just helped lead Notre Dame to a berth in the national championship game, which it lost 42-14 to Alabama. But after an academic infraction, Golson left the school, and the Fighting Irish were left without a quarterback.
That was until Wednesday, however, when Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly disclosed at an event at Grand Valley State University that former starting quarterback Tommy Rees would lead the Fighting Irish offense next season, mlive.com reported.
“I’ve always moved forward,” Kelly said according to The Associated Press. “I don’t live in the past. I don’t spend too much time in the future. I live in the present, and the present is that I’ve got Tommy Rees who is the starter for us, an established player, and he will be our starter. We think Andrew Hendrix and Malik Zaire can contribute, but Tommy will be our starter.”
This news comes a week after Kelly said there would be a three-man battle for starting quarterback between Rees, Hendrix and Zaire.
Rees, who will be a senior next season, has played in 33 games during his three years in South Bend, 18 of which were starts. He has a career total of 34 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.
While Rees appears to be the answer for next season, Golson said recently that he will try to rejoin the program in 2014.
