Sidney Crosby may be fairly soft-spoken and maybe even boring when he speaks off the ice, but on the ice is a totally different story.
The Penguins captain has a reputation for doing some chirping from time to time to both opposing players and the officials — that was certainly the case in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Bruins. Crosby was visibly upset with a couple of calls that went against him — he was whistled for two minor penalties — and he also got into it with Bruins captain Zdeno Chara. The two got into a heated shouting match at center ice at the end of the second period as all hell broke out around them.
It’s certainly not the first time Crosby and Chara have met on the ice, and apparently it’s not the first conversation they’ve had. A YouTube video from a 2007 game that Crosby was mic’d up for shows the two captains have a bit of a history together. The footage is far from heated, but it might give a little bit of perspective as to why Crosby might get under the skin of opposing players.
It is worth noting, of course, that Crosby was only 19 at the time, and it’s admittedly tough to make a connection between a regular-season game and a playoff series six years apart. So maybe he’s grown up a bit since then, but it’s probably safe to assume Chara and the rest of the Bruins may not agree with that assertion.
