The Vancouver Canucks made a big splash during the first round of the NHL draft Sunday afternoon, trading goalie Cory Schneider to New Jersey in exchange for the Devils’ ninth pick.
The Canucks then selected center Bo Horvat with their newly acquired pick.
Schneider played in 30 regular-season games for Vancouver last season, posting a 17-9-4 record with a goals-against-average of 2.11 and a save percentage of .927. The postseason didn’t go as well, though, as Schneider lost both games he appeared in with a 4.60 goals-against-average and a .880 save percentage.
The trade means Roberto Luongo will most likely be the goalie for the Canucks under new head coach John Tortorella going forward. This will also give the Devils stability at the goalie position once 41-year-old Martin Brodeur decides to retire.
Schneider signed a new contract with Vancouver before the start of the 2012-13 season. He has two years remaining on the deal, which pays him $4 million a year.
Schneider is originally from Salem, Mass., and he played his college hockey at Boston College.
