The Red Sox’ No. 1 prospect has moved up another step in the organization.
Xander Bogaerts was called up to Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday. He hit .311 with six home runs and 35 RBIs in 56 games for the Double-A Portland Seadogs. He had a .909 OPS and five stolen bases. In the month of June, he hit .424 with one home run. Bogaerts played 47 games at shortstop and nine as a designated hitter.
Bogaerts will be the youngest position player in the history of the PawSox if he plays on Thursday at 20 years, 8 months and 12 days old. Pitcher Jeff Suppan is the youngest to ever play for the PawSox at 20 years, 8 months and 1 day old.
Bogaerts, born in Aruba, has been in the Red Sox organization since being signed as an international free agent in 2009. He finished high school before joining the Dominican Summer League in 2010. He’s moved quickly through the organization, playing at Single-A Greenville in 2011, Single-A Salem and Portland in 2012, and now Portland and Pawtucket in 2013.
