The Angels announced that Albert Pujols was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday with a partially torn plantar fascia in his left foot. L.A. manager Mike Scioscia said that Pujols would be out for “a significant amount of time,” and possibly the remainder of the season.
His left foot was bothering him for most of the season, but he irritated it further during a game on Friday. His injury was then diagnosed on Saturday after his foot was examined. As for treatment, the team is saying that surgery is unlikely.
“This is something that, talking to Albert, has been going on for six or seven years,” Scioscia told The Associated Press. “It’s been going on for a long time and he’s managed it. This is a big blow to our team right now.”
“We’ll just take it one step at a time and see how it goes,” Scioscia told the AP. “But this is not something that’s going to heal in a week or two. After that we’ll just wait and get direction from our medical department and how Albert feels. It’s a significant amount of time, that’s what it’s going to take.”
Pujols, who was the Angels designated hitter for most of the season, was hitting .258 with 17 homers before going on the DL.
His injury doesn’t help a team that is already underperforming. After starting off the year with high expectations, L.A. is 48-54 on the season and the Angels sit 12 games behind Oakland entering Sunday.
