The Red Sox have held up just fine without Clay Buchholz. But getting the ace back still remains a top priority.
Fortunately for the Red Sox, Buchholz took another step toward a return Wednesday. The right-hander threw a 25-pitch bullpen session without experiencing any discomfort. Buchholz will throw again Friday, and if all goes well, he will make a minor league rehab start Sunday.
“He had another strong day today,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said before Wednesday’s game. “Long toss, he was aggressive. He got on the mound for a 25-pitch pen. The ball got out of his hand very well. Tomorrow would be a light day for him with just some light catch to get his arm moving. We’d look to repeat today on Friday and possibly a more intense bullpen session.”
Buchholz threw mostly fastballs during Wednesday’s bullpen session, and the Red Sox still haven’t placed an exact timetable on his return. He is expected to need two minor league rehab starts, so realistically, he could return within a week or so of the All-Star break’s conclusion. Since Buchholz has experienced setbacks in the past, however, the Red Sox are taking a day-by-day approach with their No. 1 starter.
Buchholz, who is dealing with a shoulder issue, hasn’t pitched since June 8.
