Barry ChurchApparently, Jolly Ranchers aren’t so jolly after all, and Barry Church learned the hard way.

The Dallas Cowboys safety was held out of practice Monday because of a trip to the dentist’s office. The issue? Church had chipped a tooth while eating a cherry-flavored Jolly Rancher hard candy and had to undergo a root canal, according to the Star-Telegram.

A few weeks passed after Church had initially been munching on the candy, he started to feel pain.

“I felt it a little. On and off. But it was nothing crazy,” he told the Star-Telegram. On Monday, it got worse. “The pain was crazy,” he said.

Church took a trip to the dentist to undergo the dreaded root canal Monday, and didn’t practice after the appointment because he was still numb from the procedure. One would think that having to undergo a root canal would make someone re-consider their snacking choices, but Church, apparently, likes the sweet stuff too much to give it up.

“I have to stick to the soft stuff — Starburst, Skittles, stuff like that,” he said.

Given the choice, Church said he would take Cowboys practice over a root canal any day.
