BOSTON — Quick, what will you be doing nine years from now?
It’s a difficult question to answer, even for Dustin Pedroia, who just signed an eight-year contract extension with the Red Sox that will take him through the 2021 season. But while a lot can happen between now and then, Pedroia isn’t ruling out the possibility of playing beyond his age 38 season, despite the wear and tear that comes with such a hard-nosed style of play.
“I don’t know that I’ll be done by then, man. I feel good, dude,” Pedroia said smiling. “I weigh 160 pounds, ya know. There’s not a lot of pounding. I’ll be fine. I don’t know. Maybe I haven’t hit my growth spurt, either. I might get taller and stronger, so I’ll be all right.”
Pedroia — who’s generously listed at 5-foot-8 — probably isn’t going to undergo a growth spurt any time soon. That’s quite all right with the Red Sox, though, as the size of the second baseman’s heart can’t get much bigger than it already is.
