The Flyers picked up a Stanley Cup-winning goaltender on the first day of free agency, but his name is not Tim Thomas.
Ray Emery, who reached the Cup Final with Ottawa in 2007 and won it all with Chicago this year, signed a one-year deal with Philadelphia on Friday, the franchise with whom he spent the 2009-10 season.
Emery put up astounding numbers as Corey Crawford‘s backup this season, going 17-1-0 with a 1.94 goals against average, but he did not see the ice during the Blackhawks’ playoff run. Since being drafted in 2001, the 30-year-old has played played for four teams — Ottawa, Philadelphia, Anaheim and Chicago.
The Flyers were known to be in the market for a goalie after buying out Ilya Bryzgalov last week, and several reports had them as a possible landing spot for Thomas. It now appears the former Bruins goalie will need to look elsewhere, as Emery and Steve Mason will battle for the starting spot in Philly this season.
Mason started just six games for the Flyers in 2012-13 after spending five years as the Blue Jackets’ No. 1 starter.
