The Red Sox have a flare for the dramatic — just ask Jonny Gomes. After his second walk-off home run this season, Gomes and the Sox are looking to keep the momentum rolling against the Padres on Independence Day.
With Wednesday’s 2-1 walk-off, Gomes has earned himself a place in the starting lineup. The Red Sox will need Gomes and the rest of the starting nine to keep the bats hot as Allen Webster takes the mound still looking for his first win of the season.
San Diego’s Carlos Quentin is coming off of a three-hit night against Jon Lester and the Sox. He led the team on Wednesday, as he was the only Padre with multiple hits, making up exactly half of the team’s total.
Eric Stults gets the nod for San Diego after a rocky start against Miami on June 26. He went 3 2/3 innings, surrendering seven hits and five earned runs. The lefty is at an even 6-6 on the season.
