Kevin Garnett won’t be donning No. 5 when he puts on his Brooklyn Nets uniform this season, but he has a pretty good reason for the change.

Garnett will be wearing No. 2 as a tribute to his late friend and teammate, Malik Sealy. On May 20, 2000, the Timberwolves guard was leaving Garnett’s birthday party when a drunk driver crossed into Sealy’s lane and crashed head-on into his SUV.

Although the two only played one full season together in Minnesota, Garnett and Sealy shared a close friendship. KG even sported No. 21 with the Timberwolves because that was Sealy’s number when he played at St. John’s. Garnett also got a tattoo with Sealy’s name on his right arm shortly after the accident.

The blockbuster trade that sent Garnett to Brooklyn allowed Garnett the opportunity to pay tribute to his close friend for the first time. The Timberwolves retired Sealy’s number in 2000 and the Celtics have the number retired in honor of Red Auerbach.
