If you build it, they will come.
The University of Oregon just gained another recruiting advantage over the rest of college football with the unveiling of their new $68 million Football Performance Center.
The six-story, multi-purpose football facility is as technologically and architecturally innovative as any football complex in the country. The center is home to the Ducks’ weight training room, locker room, players’ lounge, coach offices and meeting rooms, as well as a full-service dining hall and barber shop.
The two-story weight room, which is floored with Brazilian hardwood, overlooks the team’s three practice fields. Above the weight rooms are three stories of offices for coaches, which connect to a two-story skybridge that leads into the meeting rooms.
The exterior of the complex reflects the modern approach that design partner Gene Sandoval aimed for. Textured black glass serves as the exterior skin on the building’s block-like structure.
“It was really about, how can you embody in a three-dimensional form this notion of a team,” Sandoval told GoDucks.com. “So the concept was, we wanted to stack program elements — whether it was the weight room or the office wing — they’re all stacked together as independent masses, representing that football takes all these different components and puts them together, and they have to work together as a team for it to work.”
If wearing limitless jersey combinations in one of the country’s loudest stadiums wasn’t already a convincing recruiting pitch for the Ducks, the new football palace will certainly leave the visitors in awe. And the timing couldn’t have worked out any better for Oregon, as Alabama recently unveiled a fancy new football facility of its own. While Alabama’s complex seemed impressive upon its unveiling, Oregon’s football fortress blows it out of the water.
