Pedro Ciriaco is on the move.

The Royals announced that they have claimed Ciriaco off waivers. Ciriaco was designated for assignment by the Padres last week.

Ciriaco began 2013 with the Red Sox and appeared in 28 games before being shipped to San Diego in June. The 27-year-old has hit .228 (26-for-114) with two home runs and eight RBIs in 51 games split between the Red Sox and Padres this season.

Ciriaco has played mostly shortstop this year, but he has shown an ability to play all over the infield, and he even appeared in seven games in the outfield in 2012. Ciriaco hit .293 (76-for-259) with two home runs, 19 RBIs and 16 stolen bases in 76 games with the Red Sox last season.

The Royals now have 39 players on their 40-man roster.
