Phil Mickelson, like many other golfers who have trouble straightening out a slice, knows that sometimes facing a bit away from the hole can help a shot go where it needs to go.
In this case, though, Mickelson took it to the extreme — he faced completely away from his target.
Mickelson has been known to hit a backwards shot or two before, but he outdid himself this week while preparing for the British Open. During a practice round at Muirfield, he decided the best way to play a shot onto the 17th green was to take it backwards, and that’s just what he did, looping it up and over himself from a hill to settle the shot near the hole.
“Tee to green, it’s a great challenge,” Mickelson said afterward, according to ESPN. “Some holes you have to go through the air and can’t go on the ground.”
