The Red Sox announced that Brock Holt has been called up from Triple-A Pawtucket. Jonathan Diaz has been optioned back to Triple-A to make room for Holt.

Holt, who was acquired as part of the Joel Hanrahan trade in the offseason, will wear No. 26 and be in the Red Sox’ starting lineup Saturday. He’ll play third base and bat eighth.

This marks Holt’s first big league stint of 2013. Holt played in 24 games with the Pirates last season, hitting .292 (19-for-65). He has spent all of this season with Triple-A Pawtucket, where he hit .263 (55-for-209) in 60 games. The 25-year-old has one home run, 18 RBIs and four doubles with the PawSox.

Diaz made his major league debut at Fenway Park last Saturday after years in the minors. The 28-year-old appeared in five games with Boston, going hitless in four at-bats but scoring two runs.
