The chances of seeing Matt Garza in a Red Sox uniform are suddenly looking very slim.
Garza, whom the Red Sox were reportedly in the running to acquire before the trade deadline, is now too expensive for Boston, an industry source told CSNNE.com’s Sean McAdam.
According to McAdam, the Cubs are asking for two of the Red Sox’ top pitching prospects (from a group that includes Allen Webster, Rubby De La Rosa, Matt Barnes, Brandon Workman, Henry Owens and Anthony Ranaudo) in exchange for the veteran right-hander, a price the Sox are reportedly not willing to pay.
Garza, who has pitched for the Twins, Rays and Cubs during his eight years in the majors, is 6-1 with a 3.17 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 11 starts for Chicago this season. The Rangers, Blue Jays and Indians are reportedly the front-runners to land the 29-year-old prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
