The Yankees need an offensive boost, and they may deal some pitching to try to make it happen.
According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Yankees are aggressively shopping Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes.
An American League executive reportedly told Rosenthal that Chamberlain could soon be dealt to a National League team, although another source reportedly indicated that nothing is close despite the Yankees having discussions about both pitchers.
Chamberlain’s name has come up in trade speculation a few times this season, so it’s understandable that the Yankees are open to moving him before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. The 27-year-old, who has an extensive injury history, is 1-0 with a 5.75 ERA in 20 1/3 innings over 22 relief appearances this season.
Hughes, who — like Chamberlain — was once considered one of New York’s premier prospects, is 4-8 with a 4.55 ERA in 17 starts in 2013. He is 56-44 with a 4.41 ERA in 169 games (120 starts) over parts of seven big-league seasons.
