Ryan Howard was placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his left knee on Saturday, but the bad news gets worse for the Philadelphia Phillies.

On Monday, an MRI confirmed Howard has a torn meniscus in his left knee that will require surgery. The injury is expected to sideline the first baseman for 6-8 weeks, according to ESPN. No date for surgery has been set at this time.

Howard attempted to play through the pain and was seen limping before being sent to the DL.

The three-time All-Star missed the first half of the 2012 season recovering from a torn Achilles tendon he suffered in the 2011 playoffs. In 80 games this season, the 33-year-old is hitting .266 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs.
