Patriots Seahawks FootballSeattle Seahawks fans are known to bring the noise, but can they be the loudest in sports?

An unofficial Seahawks fan group known as Volume 12, named after the team’s famous “12th Man” has successfully applied to the Guinness Book of World Records, according to the group’s Facebook page, to have CenturyLink Field’s noise level monitored at the team’s Sept. 15 home opener against the division rival San Francisco 49ers.

The Seahawks claim the stadium can reach a decibel level of 112 during games, making them the loudest crowd in the NFL. But the rowdy 12th man in the stands still have a ways to go if they hope to break the Guinness record.

Turkish soccer team Galatasaray Spor Kulubu are the current record holders, reaching a decibel level of 131.76 during a match in March 2011. The Turkish crowd was given three tries to break the old record, producing a level of 112 on the first try and 130.55 on the second before finally setting the current record. So, there is hope for the Seahawks yet.

It won’t be an easy task, but if any game would generate such incredible noise levels from the rabid Seattle supporters it’s a showdown against the reigning NFC West champion and Super Bowl runner-up 49ers.
