The second half of the Red Sox’ season is about one thing: winning the World Series.
It’s a surprising change considering where most “experts” picked the Red Sox to finish this season. Some saw the Sox improving, but few saw Boston sitting at 19 games above .500 at the All-Star break. Most thought that the AL East was too good and that the Red Sox were entering a bridge year.
This is a heck of a bridge year, if that’s the case. The Red Sox have the best record in the American League, and their overall balance has them looking like legitimate contenders to open up the second half. John Farrell just has to make sure his troops are ready, especially with the Rays winning nine of their last 10 before the break to cut Boston’s lead in the AL East to 2 1/2 games.
No matter the end result, the second half should be an interesting ride. The first half was extremely eventful, and given the personalities, talent and potential in the Red Sox organization, things should only pick up as we head toward October.
So what exactly should we expect to happen in the second half? Well, as the “experts” have proved, making predictions is often a fruitless effort. Let’s not let that stop us from tossing out some second-half hypotheses, though.
