Whatever your feelings on Bobby Valentine are (and if you’re a Red Sox fan, they’re probably not good ones), the former manager has long been known as one of baseball’s best minds. Likewise, he’s also known as a sort of man of the people, as evidenced by his frequent bike rides to work.
So, if you ever thought it would be a lark to grab a beer with Bobby V., this might be the closest you’ll ever get.
Unfortunately, there’s not much context for a video that emerged Friday, but it clearly features Valentine hanging out at a bar while drinking a beer. Whoever is on the other end of the phone camera capturing the scene asks Valentine a few questions about Dustin Pedroia, and the result is kind of awesome.
In short, Valentine appears to have all the respect in the world for the second baseman, saying Pedroia’s skills “defy logic,” but describing Pedroia’s high energy level as “F—ed up.” Valentine also gets a few laughs from his audience when he reveals that Pedroia’s handshake may not be quite as strong as all those line drives suggest.
