With less than two months until the NBA preseason tips off, the Boston Celtics have become radio nomads.
Entercom Communications announced Tuesday that Celtics games will no longer be carried on their WEEI and WRKO stations after an agreement could not be reached on a new contract. The stations had been the radio home of the Celtics since 2005.
“WEEI has had an incredible run with the Boston Celtics, from being a part of their 17th championship banner to the end of the Big 3 era,” Entercom Boston vice president/market manager Jeff Brown said in a statement.
“Unfortunately we were unable to come to terms on a new contract moving forward. We thank the entire Celtics organization for our tremendous time together and wish them the best of luck in the future.”
It is still uncertain which station will carry Celtics games this upcoming season, according to The Boston Globe’s Chad Finn.
The only other prominent, sports-only radio network in Boston, 98.5 The Sports Hub, already holds exclusive rights to Bruins radio broadcasts. Since the teams play simultaneously often throughout the winter, it likely would not be feasible for one station to carry both.
It has also not been announced whether the radio tandem of Sean Grande, who also fills in on WEEI’s Red Sox broadcasts, and Cedric Maxwell will migrate to the whichever new radio home the Celtics find.
